Valerie Moore-Altavilla, LCSW, Bereavement Counselor
Since coming to HSB in 2008, Valerie has been a bereavement counselor with our Patient Care Services program and a grief counselor with children and adults. Valerie currently is the program coordinator for the I Have a Friend® program for kids who have lost a parent, and facilitates Art for Healing workshops. Valerie is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Art therapist, SoulCollage® Facilitator, and is trained in EMDR. During her art therapy training program, she completed an internship at San Diego Hospice and Palliative Care. It was during this time that she discovered her love for doing grief work and journeying with people through all walks of life. She says it is her calling. Valerie received her B.A. from Oklahoma State University and her MSW at Newman University in Wichita. She graduated from an 18-month post-master’s art therapy program in 2007 from UCSD. In her spare time, she loves to spend time with family and friends, and enjoys being in the sun, reading silly fantasy novels, making beanies, creating art, laughing, traveling, and being in nature. She wrote a book that is in the process of being published called, All You Need Is What You Have: Using Your 5 Senses Creatively to Move through Grief.
